Representatives of green parties from Slovenia, Austria, Italy and Croatia signed a declaration establishing the Green Forum Alpe Adria on Thursday, with the aim to improve environmental protection, strengthen the greens' voice in the European Parliament, and promote a Europe of regions and good neighbourly relations.
The document binds the parties to search for joint solutions for environmental and political issues, with each party heading the forum for a period of six months.
The institution labelled nuclear energy as the world's largest global environmental threat and stressed that one of the forum's main aims is to keep the Adriatic a safe and clean sea for the countries of Central Europe.
Slovenian Greens expressed their disaproval of the construction of two of natural gas terminals in the Gulf of Trieste and are counting on all coastal municipalities to support them.
The party's President Vlado Cus revealed that over 40,000 signatures against the construction have been collected, adding that it would have been easier to oppose the project than if Slovenia has reacted on time.
Members of the four green parties will also inspect the sites of the planed terminals and mark their locations with a shot from a flare gun at 6 PM.
The institution was initiated by Croatian, Austrian and Italian greens, with Croatian Greens slated to chair the forum for the first six months.
