Druga Godba Kicks off with Asian Rhythms

Ljubljana, 30 May

The Druga godba world music festival opened in Ljubljana on Tuesday on an Asian note, with the Slovenian-Indian project Sagar and the 15-member Indonesian group Sambasunda performing at the Cankarjev dom arts and convention centre.

On 31 May the open-air phase of the festival kicked off at Krizanke theatre. The legendary Nigerian band Egypt 80 and its front-man Seun Anikulapo Kuti offered a slightly harder version of afro beat, a style made famous by Seun Anikulapo's father Fela Kuti.
The third day of the festival brought an interesting mixture of three performances, including the afro Peru genre star Susana Baca, who was returning to Ljubljana after seven years.
Before Baka, the Croatian musician Mojmir Novakovic, accompanied by his band Kries, made an attempt at reviving the musical spirit of Slavic mythology, and Elize Carthy provided a taste of the British Folk scene.
The fourth day was dedicated to the recently deceased "Bluesman of Africa" Ali Farka Toure. The Mali project entitled Desert Blues brings together guitarist Habib Koite, Ali Farka's former band member Afel Bocoum and the traditional Tuareg music experts Tartit.
A second Slovenian world music contribution came on the closing day of the festival, 3 June, with the performance of Caminoigra, to be followed by vocal artist Benat Achiary and the French group Dupain.
