PM Jansa and Business Delegation Pay a Three-Day Official Visit to Russia

Moscow, 31 May

Spearheading a strong government and business delegation, Prime Minister Janez Jansa began a three-day official visit to the Russian Federation on 29 May, meeting numerous high-ranking Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin.

Jansa and Putin expressed their pleasure over the economic cooperation between the two countries and called for Russian investments into Slovenian economy. Jansa also met his counterpart Mikhail Fradkov, with whom he agreed that Russia would pay its US$ 129m clearing debt in the next five years.
Jansa moreover explained Slovenia's preparations for the country's stint as EU chair in the first half of 2008, listing the continuation of the strategic partnership between the EU and Russia as one of Slovenia's tasks. Slovenian Prime Minister also discussed the Russian chapel on the Vrsic mountain pass in NW Slovenia, which was erected in memory of Russian prisoners of war, who constructed the road over the pass during World War I.
Jansa also met Chairman of the Council of the Federation Sergey Mironov, Parliament Speaker Boris Gryzlov, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Alexei II, the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel meanwhile held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, with whom he also discussed the possibility of constructing a gas pipeline over the Slovenian territory.
