APZ Tone Tomsic Choir Marks 80 Years with the Concert

Ljubljana, 28 May

The Tone Tomsic Academic Choir, under the leadership of choirmistress Ursa Lah, staged a concert on Sunday evening in the Cankarjev dom concert hall in Ljubljana to mark its 80th anniversary.

At the concert, which was seen as the centrepiece of various events taking place throughout the year, the choir sang works by contemporary Slovenian composers Ambroz Copi, Pavel Dolenc, Nana Forte, Rok Golob, Vito Zuraj and Jakob Jez. It also performed a musical show written especially for the occasion by composer Peter Savli. It is called "Prisotnost" (Presence), with the lyrics written by Maja Vidmar, one of this year's Preseren Fund Award-winners.
Between 4 and 26 May, an exhibition on the choir was on display at the National and University Library (NUK). It has been transferred to Cankarjev dom where it will be showcased until 2 June.
The jubilee year will conclude on 12 December with a grand concert marking the 65th anniversary of a famous concert by the pre-war choir.
The choir was founded in 1926 by France Marolt as a male choir. Between 1938 and 1940 Marolt also led an equivalent female choir.
The male choir was banned in 1941 due to the cultural blackout during WWII, but resumed in 1946 as a mixed choir under its current name.
APZ Tone Tomsic is made up of students from the University of Ljubljana, with more than 1,600 singers having performed in the choir since its foundation.
Its repertoire includes compositions of all historical periods, but it focuses on contemporary music.
