Europe needs new energy for the continuation of development and the process of integration, President Janez Drnovsek said on Saturday as he received representatives of the International Paneuropean Union. "This is our historical responsibility," he was quoted as saying.
"The European idea is crucial, for it has been borne out of tragic war and conflict. We have to make sure that integration continues and strengthens, and that a realisation of its irreversibility emerges," Drnovsek said according to a press release from his office.
According to him, there has been a resurgence in short-term concepts, special interests and emphasised national interest. We will have to overcome these trends and find a new impetuous for Europe, he added.
Drnovsek also said that the EU constitution must be adopted. "We may not renege on the whole idea and accept the fact that Europe is in a crisis. We have to find a way out and ensure a continuation of integration," he added.
Drnovsek received the officials of the Paneuropean Union who met in Ljubljana to mark the 15th anniversary of independence and of the resurgence of the movement in the country.
