New Win for Petkovsek, Pegan Third

Moscow, 26 May

Slovenian gymnast Mitja Petkovsek has capped the spring season with a new win. He virtually demolished the competition in the parallel bars event at the World Cup in Moscow and, scoring 16 points, got a gold medal.

Aljaz Pegan also performed well on the horizontal bar but due to several mistakes finished his last competition before the summer break in third place with a score of 15.35 points. The winner in this event was Germany's Brian Gladow (15.45).
Petkovsek was pleased with his exercise, which gave him more than half a point lead over his closest rival. "It may not have been as good as the one which brought me the European Championship title, but it was beautiful," he said after the meet.
The 29-year-old gymnast has had a very successful spring season, winning four out of five World Cup meets, bagging silver in Belgium's Ghent, and adding his second European Championship title in his career.
Meanwhile, Pegan was not too happy with his performance, especially as he received the highest mark in the qualifying round. "I had a good feeling before the meet, yet, I obviously need a few more training sessions," he said.
He moreover said that he was pleased with the spring season, as he had not thought he could come so far. "However, I still have a lot of work to do before the World Championship in the autumn," added Pegan, who won his first gold of the season at the previous meet in Ghent.
Pegan and Petkovsek crowned years of their outstanding performances last year, when they both became world champions in Melbourne in November.
