MPs Start Extraordinary Session on Trieste Gulf Gas Terminals

Ljubljana, 29 May

The National Assembly started on Monday an extraordinary session on the government's response to the planned construction of two gas terminals in the Gulf of Trieste, near the Slovenian border.

The request to convene the session was filed by a group of 31 MPs of the opposition Liberal Democracy (LDS) and Social Democrats (SD) last week, as they feel the government was too "slow and lukewarm" in getting involved in Italy's procedures regarding the terminals.
The two parties therefore want the parliament to pass eleven conclusions, including one which says that Slovenia "immediately demands" that Italy return the cross-border evaluation of the environmental impact and the security assessments for both terminals to their initial stages.
Should Italy fail to agree to the demand, the opposition MPs also want the government to launch procedures for breach of EU trans-border impact directives at the European Commission.
The parliament should call on the cabinet to propose to Italy the establishment of an independent Italian-Slovenian commission for the evaluation of the terminals' effects on the environment, the two opposition parties believe.
