Jansa Welcomes Fairness of Montenegro's Referendum

Ljubljana, 22 May

Prime Minister Janez Jansa has welcomed the fair and democratic implementation of Montenegro's independence referendum. "The choice of the voters is clear, and all parties involved have a responsibility to respect it and contribute to its implementation," the PM said in a press release.

After the first unofficial results of Sunday's referendum showed that 55.4% of all people voted for an independent Montenegro, Jansa expressed hope on Monday that this referendum will not lead to further tensions in the country.
"By becoming independent, Montenegro will assume its sovereignty, and at the same time responsibility for all its people. It is necessary for both sides to set up a constructive dialogue," Jansa feels.
He moreover called on both countries to continue their efforts associated with Euro-Atlantic organisations on new foundations.
"Slovenia, which would like to continue its cooperation with both Serbia and Montenegro, is prepared to give the two countries all the necessary support," the press release also reads.
