The third Slovenian brown bear, a five-year old female named Hvala (Thank You) was successfully released in the Arbas region of the French Pyrenees early on Wednesday.
The 100 kilogram bear will join two other Slovenian bears, Palouma and Francka, which were released in the Pyrenees in late April, sparking protests by French farmers in the region.
The relocation project has been resumed after a temporary halt requested by the French Environment Ministry after twelve pots of corn fodder laced with glass shards were discovered in the southwestern region of the Pyrenees at the end of April.
The relocation project is based on an agreement signed in September last year by Slovenian Environment Minister Janez Podobnik and the French Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Development Nelly Olin. In line with the agreement France will cover the costs of the entire project, which should be completed by the end of August.
