Ljubljana Festival to Host 109 Events
Ljubljana Festival 2006 will open on 19 June with the famous New York Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductor Lorin Maazel. The concert will honour Mozart by playing his Symphony No. 41 in C-Major, KV 551 "Jupiter" and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D-Minor.
The festival, which will close on 31 August, will host 109 events with 3,500 performers from 20 different countries, its organisers told the press in Ljubljana on Friday.
Alongside the central summer festival with 81 different events, the name Ljubljana Festival 2006 also covers the Slovenian Days of Music, a fine arts workshop, a series of Latin-American concerts and other events.
This year's festival will be more varied, have more quality and will offer several novelties, the honorary patron of the festival, Mayor of Ljubljana Danica Simsic pointed out at the presentation.
Simsic particularly mentioned the performance of the Sechuan Opera, mentioning that she arranged its visit during her stay in China last year. The ensemble comes from Chengdu, a city which has been twinned with Ljubljana for a quarter of a century.
The director and artistic leader of the festival Darko Brlek said this year they had succeeded in attracting all the important cultural institutions in the country as well as some foreigners who live in Slovenia and Slovenian artists who work abroad.
The total cost of all events covered by Festival Ljubljana 2006 is expected to amount to around SIT 400m (EUR 1.67m). The main supporter, the City of Ljubljana, will contribute SIT 162m (EUR 676,000).
Brlek also drew attention to the Vienna State Ballet, which will perform the ballet "Giselle" under the leadership of conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. In cooperation with the city of Vienna, Ljubljana Castle will host a Viennese festival of Mozart's musical film.
Musico-dramatic works also include the Architecture of Silence, a dance-music project by Edward Clug; the premiere of "Tesla" by theatre director Tomaz Pandur; the musical "Aida" by the Zagreb Komedija, various performances by the Maribor Opera, and Mozart's "Requiem" with the Slovenian Philharmonic.
The Ljubljana Opera and Ballet will perform the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" as well as the operas "The Rhine Nymphs" and "The Love for Three Oranges".
Discounted tickets will be on sale between 12 May and 15 June. The festival's events can also be found on the website www.ljubljanafestival.si.
