Ljubljana World Music Festival with Strong African Flavour

Ljubljana, 11 May

The menu of the 22nd annual Druga godba festival of world music to be held in Ljubljana between 30 May and 3 June will offer 15 performances from 12 countries, including India, Indonesia, Peru, Nigeria and Mali.

The festival will traditionally open in Cankarjev dom arts centre, with concerts by the Slovenian-Indian project Sagar and the 15-member Indonesian group Sambasunda.
The head of the festival, Bogdan Benigar, said at a news conference on Thursday that while Sagar delights with a fusion of traditional Indian music and jazz, Sambasundra's eclectic musical language is governed by the group's use of traditional Indonesian instruments.
On 31 May the open-air phase at Krizanke theatre will kick off with the legendary Nigerian band Egypt and its front-man Seun Anikulapo Kuti, which will offer a slightly harder version of afro beat, a style made famous by Seun Anikulapo's father Fela Kuti.
The third day of the festival will bring an interesting mixture of three performances including the closing concert by afro Peru genre star Susana Baca, who is returning to Ljubljana after seven years.
Before Baka, the Croatian musician Mojmir Novakovic backed by his Kries band will make an attempt at reviving the musical spirit of Slavic mythology and Elize Carthy will offer a taste of the British Folk scene.
The fourth day will be dedicated to the recently deceased Ali Farka Toure. The Mali project entitled Desert Blues joins on the stage guitarist Habib Koite, Ali Farka's former band member Afel Bocoum and the traditional Tuareg music experts Tartit.
A second Slovenian world music contribution will come on the closing day of the festival with the performance of Caminoigra to be followed by vocal artist Benat Achiary and the French group Dupain which will offer an insight into to Marseilles music scene.
