Slovenian Theatre Enjoys Success at Bogota Festival

Ljubljana, 24 April

Guest appearance of the Ljubljana-based Slovensko mladinsko gledalisce (SMG) at this year's 10th Ibero-American Theatre Festival in Colombia's Bogota between 31 March and 16 April was a success despite the poor working conditions and the crowded theatres, actress Romana Salehar told the press on Monday.

"The audience's reactions were warm, it seemed they were breathing with the show," said Salehar, who plays the leading female role in Queen Margot, directed by Slovenia's Diego de Brea.
De Brea meanwhile said that Queen Margot, performed five times and seen by almost 4,000 people at the festival, is "close to the Colombians because of its sensuality, as their perception of theatre also includes a ritual element, cleansed of the European mask".
The SMG ensemble also performed a Slovenian-Colombian co-production Whale's Stomach, written by Colombian author Fabio Rubiano Orjuela and directed by Slovenian director Matjaz Pograjc.
According to the stage director Zeljko Hrs, the play talks about topical issues also in Colombia; trafficking in human organs and children, and child pornography.
The SMG is one of the few world theatre groups which has been participating at the Bogota biennial since 1992, representing not only Slovenia, but also Europe, the SMG programme director Matjaz Berger said.
The Bogota biennial is one of the largest theatre festivals in the world, with this year's edition seeing 66 international and 154 Colombian theatres ensembles performing 700 shows.
