A standing ovation crowned a four-day guest appearance of Slovenia's Drama National Theatre on Saturday evening, as the ensemble played the last of its four productions at Macedonia's National Theatre in Skopje.
The Macedonian audience cheered "bravo, bravo" as the Slovenian ensemble from Ljubljana completed Christophe Marlowe's "Eduard II", which was directed by Diego de Brea with Janez Skof in the lead.
The most fervent theatre-goers came to see all four productions, but were unanimous that Marlowe's Renaissance drama outmatched even the outstanding "Anna Karenina", "Alamut" and "The Brothers Karamazov".
Moreover, the artistic director of the Macedonian National Theatre Aleksandar Popovski, who appeared on the stage during the standing ovation, went as far as labelling the Drama ensemble "magicians".
His opinion was shared by several theatre critics, who talked in superlatives when asked by STA to assess the "comeback" of the Slovenian theatre to Skopje.
Even before the first production was played on Wednesday, Popovski said that Drama's guest appearance in Macedonia was extremely important because it represented "a dialogue between two environments with a similar understanding of the theatre".
According to him, Slovenia came to Macedonia with "the best of its current repertoire". Popovski also labelled Drama as the best theatre house he had ever worked with. "This is real European theatre," he added.
