Gorizia, 20 April

Concerts and other festivities in the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica and its Italian neighbour Gorizia will mark the 2nd anniversary of Slovenia's EU entry. The central celebration of the entry took place on 1 May 2004 on the joint square between the two towns.

The municipalities of Gorizia, Nova Gorica and Sempeter-Vrtojba are cooperating extremely well, Nova Gorica Mayor Mirko Brulc said at a joint press conference with his Gorizia counterpart Vittorio Brancati in Gorizia on Thursday.
Last year they handed out for the first time a joint award to individuals and institutions that contributed to the development and promotion of cross-border cooperation, he added.
This year the award will go to Gorizia film director Nadja Veluscek, who will receive it at Gorizia Castle on Friday, 23 April.
Also on Friday, Italian jazz singer Rossana Casale will stage a free concert in Verdi's theatre in Gorizia, as part of the celebration marking 1005 years since the first written mention of Gorizia and nearby Solkan as well as the Gorizia Jazz 2006 festival.
A day later a traditional maypole will be erected in Nova Gorica, followed by a joint concert of Slovenian and Italian groups on the shared square.
The same square will see a concert of Slovenian and Italian choirs on Sunday, 30 April, followed by the traditional bonfire and a concert of Slovenian pop-folk singer Vlado Kreslin.
Brulc moreover expressed his hope that the new Italian government would meet the Slovenian cabinet in Nova Gorica on 15 July, when the centenary of the Transalpina railway linking Gorizia and Slovenia's Jesenice will be celebrated.
The Slovenian government has already confirmed its attendance at the event.
