Anthology of Slovenian Poetry Published in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Ljubljana, 20 April

An anthology of Slovenian poetry of the second half of the 20th century, dubbed "U jantaru vremena" (In the Amber of Time), has been published in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in what is one of the largest anthologies of Slovenian poems published abroad.

Bosnian-born poet, writer, literary critic, anthologist and translator Josip Osti (60) selected and also translated poems of 74 Slovenian authors, including Edvard Kocbek, Ivan Minatti, Dane Zajc, Ciril Zlobec, Kajetan Kovic, Tomaz Salamun, Niko Grafenauer, Svetlana Makarovic, and Boris A. Novak.
Osti's anthology, published by the Sarajevo-based publisher Tugra, presents the trends in Slovenian poetry since 1950s through a well-considered selection of older and younger poets.
In the accompanying text, Osti mentions the legacy of Slovenia's greatest poet France Preseren (1800-1848) which in his view had a profound impact on the development of Slovenian poetry.
Osti moreover included the famous Slovenian poet Srecko Kosovel, selecting poems from Kosovel's collection "Integrali" (Integrals), which was published in 1967, 40 years after the poet's death.
"The anthology plays an important role in cultural and human relations between Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina," Boris A. Novak said at Thursday's press conference.
Novak moreover pointed out that the anthology is an important insight into the work of Slovenian poets. He moreover hopes that a similar collection of poems will soon be published in Slovenian as well.
Maribor-based publisher Litera is soon to publish a collection of works by the anthology's editor Hadzem Hajdarevic, who is also a member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Writers' Association, which plans several projects with the Slovenian Writers' Association in the future.
