Slovenian Prints to Be Showcased in Skopje

The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) in Skopje is to host an exhibition of Slovenian prints from the last 50 years, with the opening ceremony scheduled for Tuesday evening.

"The Treasures of Slovenian Prints 1955-2005" is organised by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and the National Gallery in Ljubljana and is to feature 33 acclaimed artists and the group Irwin for a month.
Each artist will be presented with four prints, which have been selected from the archives of the National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, and from the personal archives of the artists themselves, Zoran Mezeg of the SAZU told STA.
The SAZU has already considered taking the Skopje show to one of the exhibition sites or galleries in Ljubljana, or another foreign academy, Mezeg also said.
The National Gallery has moreover prepared a bilingual catalogue in Macedonian and English with the reproductions of all works from the exhibition, which is sponsored by the Slovenian finance and culture ministries.
The idea to renew the cooperation between the two academies of sciences and arts, which was interrupted by the turbulent 1990s, came from MANU's art historian Cvetan Grozdanov, who visited the SAZU in 2004.
Cooperation in science is to follow, Bostjan Zesk of the SAZU writes in a text accompanying the catalogue. This way, we will be able to present national scientific and artistic achievements which are important for national identity, he adds.
In his accompanying text, Grozdanov stresses that Slovenian prints follow the world trends, at the same time bearing the specific expression of the Slovenian nation. "It is no coincidence that 42 Macedonian artist studied with the greatest Slovenian teachers in Ljubljana after WWII," he says.
Lojze Gostisa, the curator of the show, outlines in the catalogue the development of Slovenian graphic arts from the first half of the 16th century, stresses the importance of the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, and describes the characteristics of contemporary Slovenian prints.
The show at the MANU represents an introduction into the days of Slovenian culture in Skopje, where the Ljubljana Drama Theatre will be making its largest guest appearance in Macedonia between Wednesday and Saturday.
