All parliamentary parties bar the opposition LDS signed up in principle to the development partnership, a scheme put forward by PM Janez Jansa to find broad consensus on government-sponsored economic reforms. "Slovenia has made a great leap forward," PM Jansa said on Friday, 7 April, adding that consensus has been reached on the programming as well as the procedural part of the agreement.
"This has significantly strengthened the political alliance that has been endorsing reform efforts," Jansa said. Pending confirmation by the relevant bodies of the parties, the reform package will get an endorsement that exceeds the coalition, he added. Jansa also regretted that the LDS has not joined the pact.
Meanwhile, Borut Pahor, the head of the opposition Social Democrats (SD) was very pleased with the meeting, saying that the party was "doing something good for democracy and Slovenia" by joining the pact. He said broad political consensus was needed to "turn reforms that generate fear to reforms that generate hope."
