Over Million Theatre Tickets Sold in 2003-04, Statistics Show

Ljubljana, 27 March

Slovenian theatres sold around 1,052,000 tickets in Slovenia in the 2003-2004 season, shows data from the National Statistical Office released on Friday ahead of the World Theatre Day, which was celebrated on Monday.

The survey polled a total of 35 theatres and theatre groups which played 5,137 performances of 390 plays, of which 305 productions were performed in Slovenia.
Meanwhile, 16.1% of performances, played by Slovenian theatre groups abroad, were seen by an additional 514,000 theatre-goers.
Theatre groups mostly staged plays by foreign authors (57.2%), with Croatia, Austria and Italy as the most popular foreign destinations.
Theatres and theatre groups moreover had 1,444 full-time employees in the 2003-2004 season, 78.5% of which worked in professional theatre houses.
The number of professional and experimental theatre groups, and consequently the number of theatre-goers, greatly increased in comparison with the 1989-1990 season, when eight such theatres sold 395,000 tickets.
Meanwhile, the number of professional youth and children's theatre houses remained the same in the period, however, these theatre houses staged many more plays.
Four amateur theatre ensembles meanwhile played 447 performances in the 2003-2004 season, 200 more than in the 2002-2003 season.
The number of independent theatre groups remained the same in 2003-2004 compared with the previous season, but played 994 performances in comparison with 662 in the 2002-2003 season.
