Students and Unions Express Support for French Protests

Ljubljana, 24 March

Representatives of the Student Organisation of Slovenia (SOS) and the Association of Free Trade Unions of Slovenia (ZSSS) held a rally in front of the French Embassy in Ljubljana on Friday in a show of support for French unions and students protesting a new labour law.

According to ZSSS president Dusan Semolic, the Slovenian protesters - a group of about 50 people - gathered in a show support for the French youth's demand for a withdrawal of the government's contested First Employment Contract (CPE).
"To see this happening in the heart of Europe is simply despicable," Semolic commented on the contested open-ended contract for under 26-year-olds that can allows no cause firings during the first two years.
SOS leader Miha Ulcar joined Semolic in noting that Slovenia could face similar developments in the near run. According to Ulcar, the Slovenian government has shown utter ignorance with regard to the student's proposals, which could lead to protests in the near future.
The French Embassy was also handed a letter by the students, expressing solidarity with their peer's struggle. "The fight of the French students provides us with additional motivation to push for our social security and a high quality of education on all levels," the students wrote in the statement.
