Slovenia Interested in EU Qualification Recognition Programme
Slovenia expressed its interest in the planned implementation of the EU's framework qualification recognition programme, which would also include the Western Balkans and other states in the region, Education Minister Milan Zver said in Vienna on Friday.
Zver moreover stressed at the closure of an informal meeting of EU education ministers that such a programme would ensure better compatibility among national systems of qualifications.
Slovenia should not have too many problems with setting up such a programme, he added, as the country's current education programme is already very much like the planned European model.
It is very important that the programme includes eastern European countries, especially from the Balkans, as those are the countries Europe will get its workforce from, he explained.
Indeed, "it is in Europe's vital interest to ensure that the education systems in those countries are as similar and compatible as possible to European systems," he added.
Slovenia also proposed that education minister of Western Balkan countries would also be invited to all informal meetings of EU education ministers.
On Thursday, when Slovenia was represented by Science and Higher Education Minister Jure Zupan, the meeting examined the establishment of a European Institute of Technology (EIT), Zver said.
The institute, which would unite the best scientists, infrastructure and money from universities, research centres and companies around the EU got general approval by the ministers.
However, he added, several issues remained unsolved, with the most contentious one being the future seat of the institute. He said that big countries, especially France, are lobbying to host the body.
