Meeting his Slovenian counterpart Lovro Sturm in Ljubljana on Friday, Luxembourg Justice Minister Luc Frieden said Slovenia's measures targeting the court backlog were a step in the right direction.
Frieden, who has responded to Sturm's invitation to visit, also pointed out that Slovenia was not alone in the EU as regards drawn out legal cases and that other member states were introducing similar measures.
While adding that exchange of best practice among states should not be neglected, he also noted that citizens should be aware that quick procedures do not necessarily guarantee them optimal democratic rights.
According to Frieden, judiciary, freedom and security are areas that will need a lot of attention from the EU in the coming years, as problems arising from these issues extend beyond the borders of individual member states.
The Luxembourg official praised Slovenia's achievements in recent years, saying the country has become a constructive partner in the EU Council of Ministers and is also already preparing to preside over the bloc in 2008.
