Slovenian, Italian Mayors Call on Italy to Open WWII Archives
Italy must follow Slovenia's example and open its archives on WWII fascist terror, the mayors of the Slovenian border town of Nova Gorica (W) and Italy's Gorizia, Mirko Brulc and Vittorio Brancati said in Nova Gorica on Wednesday.
Brulc and Brancati moreover called on both countries to accept responsibility for their actions in the past.
Brulc pointed out that he supports Slovenia's FM Dimitrij Rupel in his endeavours to clear up the past, but at the same time expects from Rupel a demand for a list of Fascist victims from Italy. Brancati agreed, adding that events that took place before, during and after WWII must be brought to light.
The mayors' news conference comes in response to the numerous controversies that have erupted in Italy over a list of 1,048 Italians who went missing in the Gorizia region after WWII.
The mayors pointed out that they have notified the public on the handover of the list in December last year, however, the news only made the front page in Italy for now, in the wake of the Italian elections.
