Official: Slovenia Supports Key Facets of EU Energy Policy

Brussels, 14 March

The Slovenian official attending the meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels on Tuesday said that Slovenia supports all key facets of the proposed European energy policy.

According to Economics Ministry official Franc Zlahtic, Slovenia endorses the solutions set out in the green paper released by the European Commission last week.
We support the efforts for an integrated energy network, diversified sources and dialogue with partners, said Zlahtic, the acting head of the Energy Directorate at the ministry.
He added that Slovenia was also in favour of the establishment of a European energy regulator and European energy observatory as well as the drafting of a strategic interoperability plan.
Moreover, the Slovenian official used meeting to outline the lack of implementation of existing energy directives and the need for measures to be based on concrete analysis.
Slovenia and Luxembourg joined forces to point out the problem of subsidies for renewable resources, which the European Commission has decided to scrutinise because of fears it violated the EU system of state aid.
Additionally, Zlahtic announced that Slovenia would launch an extensive debate on the proposed European energy policy which would help form Slovenia's stance on the document.
Meanwhile, Zlahtic explained that Slovenia's dependence on foreign energy sources was similar to that of other EU member states.
Domestic natural sources provide for 44% of domestic energy needs, with nuclear energy accounting for another 25%, he said.
He added that Slovenia purchases its natural gas from Russia and Algeria, while crude oil is bought on the open market.
