Some 55,000 visitors gathered in Ptuj (NE) on Sunday to watch the central carnival procession at Slovenia's largest Shrovetide festival.
The procession which was attended by some 2,400 different masks including 72 organised groups, was once again dominated by the region's distinctive figures, the kurenti.
More than 400 of the winter-chasing kurenti descended on the streets of the historic city in a display which also pleased the honorary sponsor of the procession, Culture Minister Vasko Simoniti.
The 46th Ptuj carnival will officially end with the burial of "pust" or the Shrovetide man in late afternoon on Shrovetide Tuesday.
Apart from Ptuj, almost every Slovenian city and town hosted Shrovetide festivities this weekend. Among the larger ones, the event in the central Slovenian town of Cerknica was dominated by local witches, together with the large Frog, Pike and Dragon alongside dormice, bats and devils.
