In response to the controversial cartoons of the prophet Mohammed recently published by several European newspapers, including Slovenian, the Meshihat of the Islamic community in Slovenia has condemned the misrepresentation of the prophet.
In its Monday's press release, the Meshihat called on all Muslims in Slovenia, Europe and the rest of the world to refrain from violent protests because they harm the good name of Mohammed and Islam as a whole.
Furthermore, it advised the media to stop spreading Islamophobia in the name of freedom, adding that now is the time for dialogue between the cultures and civilisations.
However, the Slovenian Islamic community said it is pleased with public apologies by media outlets and politicians, especially by President Janez Drnovsek, hoping that the situation would soon calm down.
According to the press release, the freedom of speech should not be an excuse for hurting the feelings of other people, as billions of Muslims have been offended by the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten, which was the first to publish the cartoons in September.
"Perhaps this was amusing to the Danish cartoonist, yet, for Muslims, this is a serious offence against the holiness of Islam," the press release also reads.
