The management of Slovenia's largest poultry producer Perutnina Ptuj believes that Slovenians are well informed about measures against bird flu and will not alter their eating habits due to the discovery of bird flu in the country.
"Our protective measures, which have been in place since the middle of last year, have completely isolated our poultry farms and processing plants from domestic and wild birds and all other poultry," the company told STA on Monday.
Besides prohibiting the employees of the Ptuj-based company from moving between individual plants, the workers are also banned from keeping poultry at home, Perutnina Ptuj added.
Moreover, the constant monitoring of veterinary and sanitary measures has proved that the measures have been successful and that the products are safe, the company explained.
The measures furthermore already comply with the most stringent standards for such cases and therefore cannot be intensified, Perutnina added.
The company's Croatian subsidiary Pipo Cakovec also implemented the same safety measures, the poultry producer said.
Meanwhile, poultry producer Pivka perutninarstvo, which exports 10% of its production, half of it to Croatia, is more concerned over Croatia's decision to ban poultry imports from all countries where bird flu has been discovered.
It remains to be seen if the remaining export countries opt for the same measures, the company added, but it voiced no major concerns over a possible drop in domestic demand.
All animals bred by Slovenia's second largest poultry producer is kept indoors.
