Fifth Rotation of Slovenian Soldiers to Leave for Afghanistan

Ljubljana, 13 February

A 49-strong Armed Forces unit is scheduled to head for Afghanistan in what is the country's largest contingent to take part in the ISAF peacekeeping mission so far, the Defence Ministry said.

Taking over the tasks from the fourth rotation, 47 of the new soldiers will be protecting the compound in the western town of Herat for the next six months, while two soldiers will be stationed in Kabul.
The Slovenian contingent is equipped with special gear which is different from the standard-issued equipment due to the extreme conditions in Afghanistan.
The contingent is taking with it light infantry weapons, three Humvees and four Valuk armoured vehicles.
Meanwhile, Slovenian firefighters are returning home at the end of February after working at Kabul's airport Kaia and training Afghan firefighters for 18 months. Furthermore, two Slovenian veterinarians are expected back home at the same time.
