The violent reactions of Muslims over cartoons of prophet Mohammad could intensify and everything must be done to calm the protesters, including apologies by Western politicians, President Janez Drnovsek said on Thursday.
European politicians mainly expressed their regrets over the publication of the cartoons, however the Muslim world is expecting an apology, Drnovsek told the press.
This is a wider issue which also has a symbolic meaning for relations between the two parts of the world. "The Western civilisation should reconsider its attitude towards those it sees as somewhat inferior," Drnovsek pointed out.
Indeed, the president believes that much more will have to be done to address the very roots of the problem, otherwise larger and more violent protests might erupt in the future.
"What is the point in talking about freedom as the main value of the West if Western governments keep restricting freedom because of security issues and terrorist threats, when such threats stem from a misguided attitude towards another civilisation and from numerous past mistakes," the president added.
