The government adopted on Thursday amendments to the act on parenthood care and family income, which expands the right to shorter working hours to self-employed parents, Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs Janez Drobnic told the press after the session.
In line with the amendments, a parent raising two children will also have the right to shorter working hours until the eldest child is six years old.
Self-employed parents will be entitled to social security benefits up to the child's third year. A parent taking care of two or more children with a moderate or serious mental or physical handicap will also have the right to an allowance due to income loss.
According to the current legislation, only a parent raising a child with a serious mental or physical handicap can receive such aid.
With the changes, there will no longer be a deadline for claiming the right to an allowance for large families.
Moreover, this allowance will be increased, which means families with three children will be receiving SIT 81,910 (EUR 342) and families with four or more children SIT 100,000 (EUR 417).
According to the amendments, place of residence instead of permanent residence will be required as a condition for child benefits.
