Dekleva and Godina Conferred Preseren Awards

Ljubljana, 07 February

Essayist and writer Milan Dekleva and film director Karpo Godina received the Preseren Awards, the highest national awards for outstanding achievement in arts and culture, at a ceremony held Tuesday, on the eve of Culture Day.

Milan Dekleva, born in Ljubljana in 1946, is one of the most important Slovenian modern and postmodern poets. He is the author of several poetry volumes, novels and short stories, as well as the recipient of a number of awards, notably the Preseren Fund Award, the Rozanc Award and the Veronika Award.
Godina, born in Macedonia's Skopje in 1943, has directed four feature films and several short films, his most widely recognised work being the 1980 feature "Splav meduze" (The Medusa Raft). He was the recipient of the Preseren Fund Award in 1980.
The Preseren Fund Awards for extraordinary achievements were also conferred. Sculptor Mirko Bratusa was awarded for his exhibition in the Circulo de Bellas Artes gallery in Madrid, pianist Bojan Gorisek for his recent concert achievements, actor Natasa Barbara Gracner for a number of outstanding performances in the past few years.
Also honoured were writer Milan Klec for the novel "Srcno dober clovek in zvest prijatelj" (A Kindhearted Man and a Faithful Friend), puppet theatre artist Silvan Omerzu for his trilogy "Misterij zivljenja in Smrti" (The Mystery of Life and Death) and poet Maja Vidmar for her collection "Prisotnost" (Presence).
Last-year's recipients of the Preseren Awards were painter Bogdan Borcic and flautist Irena Grafenauer.
The Preseren Award does not imply only prestige, but also brings financial reward as each laureate receives SIT 4.5m (EUR 18,700). The winners of the Preseren Fund Awards each got SIT 1.5m (6,200 EUR).
