Labour Minister Janez Drobnic said he hopes that a number of old EU member states would lift their restrictions for workers from new EU members as he attended an informal meeting of EU labour ministers in Villach on Friday.
Addressing the press on the margins of the meeting, Drobnic would not say which countries he would most like to see lift restrictions on labour from new EU member states, among them Slovenia.
"Slovenia continues to underscore its wish for openness, for the free movement of services and labour. Slovenian poses no threats to other countries; other countries are not a threat to Slovenia," he said.
According to him, Slovenia hopes that some old EU members would open their labour markets to workers from Slovenia as early as this year.
Apart from Austria and Germany, who have shown no readiness to lift restrictions, other old EU member states have expressed willingness to debate the lifting of restrictions, Drobnic said.
However, Slovenia has entered into talks with Austria on possible exceptions to the restrictions, such as in the tourism and education sectors. He said that Europe needs to take measures to create a more flexible labour market.
