Delo Gets New Head of Management Board

Ljubljana, 20 January

The supervisory board of Slovenia's leading newspaper company, Delo, has named the former editor-in-chief of right-leaning weekly Mag, Danilo Slivnik, to head the company's management board. The appointment was made at the session of the supervisory board, the first since three new supervisors were elected to the six-member board in late December.

Outgoing chairman Tomaz Perovic tendered his resignation at the session. The other two board members, Natasa Velkavrh and Matija Vojska, have also resigned but will stay on until 10 March.
The supervisors have also asked the new chief exec to nominate a new editor-in-chief in two weeks; Slivnik said he would not nominate Mag editor-in-chief Janez Markes, who had been named by pundits as the top candidate for the post.
According to Slivnik, the supervisors also expect the management to draw up a business plan for this year as soon as possible, and reach agreement with the journalists, who are unhappy with the tense situation at the paper and want an editor-in-chief with full powers and a new collective agreement.
Slivnik was originally appointed to Delo's management board in October. Not long after, Delo acquired Mag and asset management firm KD Group - whose chairman is thought to be an ally of the government of Janez Jansa - bought nearly 20% of Delo.
