"Three Oranges" to Be Staged in Cankarjev Dom
The Slovenian National Opera and Ballet (SNG) and the Cankarjev dom arts centre will jointly stage Prokofiev's modern opera "The Love for Three Oranges", SNG acting director Kristijan Ukmar has recently told the press. The director is Vito Taufer and the conductor Dieter Rossberg.
Following last year's successful co-production of "The Rhine Nymphs", the partnership has decided to take on Prokofiev's fantastic opera fairy tale, which can be described as a mix of burlesque comedy and gentle lyricism.
"The Love for Three Oranges" has a good track record in Slovenian opera history. It was first produced in the 1927/28 season, while its 1954 production was recorded by Philips and proved an international success.
According to Mitja Rotovnik, director general of Cankarjev dom, the opera will premiere on 20 January at the Cankarjev Dom, with 12 further performances planned. It is not yet known if there will be any performances abroad.
Rotovnik added on Tuesday that the entire production costs would amount to SIT 330m (EUR 1.37m), with ticket sales netting SIT 70m (EUR 292,000), with the remainder covered by the Ministry of Culture, Cankarjev dom and sponsorship by pharmaceuticals company Krka.
