Jansa Says Coalition Is Good Manager of the State

Ljubljana, 10 January

The government coalition proved a good manager of the country in 2005, PM Janez Jansa said on Tuesday as the coalition leaders met to review the implementation of the coalition agreement.

The coalition agreement was being fully implemented, whereas the four ruling parties are yet to undertake "the two key tasks": structural reform and EU presidency, said Jansa.
The coalition managed to improve macroeconomic indicators in 2005, eurozone membership criteria were met, while the citizens' social situation did not worsen, Jansa listed some of his government's achievements.
Commenting on some of the junior coalition partners' second thoughts about a planned flat tax, Jansa said this was only one of 70 planned measures to make the economy fit. This measure is primarily a matter to be discussed with social partners, he said.
Jansa reiterated that the government would try to prove with arguments that a flat tax rate was a good choice, but would try to find alternatives to it if the social partners failed to reach a consensus on the measure.
Asked about his December observation that some ministers seem not to be up to the task of running their ministry, Jansa said that "the situation has improved", so he is not thinking about any replacements at the moment.
Jansa also responded to the grievances of junior coalition partners which claim that their proposals are not being sufficiently taken into consideration in the coalition. He said that "it was in fact his SDS that had to concede the most...".
