Mojca Sencar, a long-serving anesthetist at the Oncologic Institute in Ljubljana, has been selected Woman of the Year by readers of one of the most popular Slovenian women's magazines, Jana.
After retiring, Sencar, who got breast cancer almost 25 years ago, became the president of the Slovenian association for the fight against breast cancer, Europa Donna, where she has been helping patients with her experience.
In her speech at the Opera House in Ljubljana on Thursday, Sencar said she was confident the readers of Jana decided to reward the long-lasting efforts of Europa Donna, which has been striving to break the silence surrounding breast cancer.
Anthropologist and lecturer Vesna V. Godina, commissioner for access to public information Natasa Pirc Musar, actress Natasa Tic Ralijan and author and screenwriter Janja Vidmar were also among the 11 names shortlisted for this-year's award.
The woman of the year "competition" goes back to 1988, when the title went to the current MEP Mojca Drcar Murko. Last-year's winner was flautist Irena Grafenauer.
