Slovenia not Entirely Happy with WTO Deal

Ljubljana, 19 December

Although Slovenia backed the ministerial declaration adopted at the WTO ministerial conference in Hong Kong, the country is not entirely satisfied with its contents, Economics Ministry State Secretary Andrijana Starina Kosem said on Sunday.

According to Starina Kosem, Slovenia was not happy with the compromise reached on services and industrial products. However, the head of the Slovenian delegation to the WTO talks added that Slovenia was pleased overall with EU's negotiating strategy.
Meanwhile, the Economics Ministry said on Monday that the country supports the deal which calls for the elimination of export subsidies in agriculture by the end of 2013.
At the same time Slovenia insists that negotiations on the access of the EU to the markets for services and industrial products in developing countries run parallel to the elimination of subsidies.
The compromise has strengthened trust in the system of multilateral negotiations, the key component of this round of talks, the ministry added.
The breakthrough in Hong Kong came after failure at the Seattle (2001) and Cancun (2003) rounds of talks.
