Poet Maja Vidmar is the winner of this year's Jenko Award, conferred by the Slovenian Writers' Association for the best collection of poems of the past two years.
Vidmar's collection "Prisotnost" (Presence), which the jury selected out of five shortlisted works, is about a woman talking to a male God, which she sees as ruthless, cruel, arrogant, absent and, most of all, incomprehensible.
This relationship, however, does not come without a sense of humour, which is also the poet's characteristic, according to the Jenko Award jury.
Like all of her works, Vidmar's fourth collection is also structured thoughtfully and subtly. She uses metaphors about a woman's and a mother's body in connection with a poetical topic, which is something new in poetry.
Vidmar's book, published by the Centre for Slovenian Literature, is undoubtedly the best poetry collection of her career. All poems reflect incredible subtleness, will and power, poet Barbara Korun said.
Last year's Jenko Award, which has been conferred since 1986, went to poets Ciril Bergles for his collection "Moj dnevnik prica" (My Diary Bears Witness) and Joze Snoj for "Poslikava notranjscine" (Painting the Interior).
