Deal Good for Slovenia and EU, Coalition Officials Say

Ljubljana, 17 December

The deal reached by EU leaders on the 2007-2013 EU spending plan is important for Slovenia as well as other EU member states, especially the newcomers, leading Slovenian coalition officials have said.

According to chairs of the parliamentary foreign policy and EU affairs committees, Jozef Jerovsek (SDS) and Anton Kokalj (NSi), Slovenia has come away from the EU summit in Brussels with a good deal.
A lack of a deal would have been much worse for Slovenia because of the problems it has with cohesion regions, Jerovsek said on Saturday.
The deal, meanwhile, means that Slovenia has secured its net beneficiary status in the EU for the next seven years, he said, adding that "there couldn't have been a better agreement for Slovenia".
"This is cause for celebration," said Kokalj, who added that the deal was a fitting end to the year and a good omen for the future.
The agreement opens the door to more tolerant and cooperative talks on other challenges facing the bloc, he said. "Here I mean particularly on the part of the old member states, who strayed somewhat this year." Speaker of Parliament France Cukjati has said he is "very happy" that EU leaders managed to reach agreement on the 2007-2013 EU spending plan at their summit in Brussels. The European Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik has expressed his satisfaction with the deal reached by EU leaders on the 2007-2013 EU spending plan.
