Prime Minister Janez Jansa is adamant that the public supports the structural reforms promoted by the government. According to him, there are different views about various measures that are being proposed, but overall the public remains supportive.
"The public view on reforms cannot be measured only on the basis of the view about one out of the 70 proposed measures," Jansa said at Monday's press conference in a reference to widespread disapproval of the flat tax.
His comments come days after the Politbarometer public opinion poll showed only 29% of respondents in favour of reforms, with opposition at 53%.
The same poll also showed the government's approval rating fall to 39%, its lowest rate of support since taking office at the end of last year.
Jansa reiterated his doubts about the credibility of the Politbarometer poll. "I'm amazed that everybody is taking this least credible survey in Slovenia so seriously," he said. He added that it was not surprising the government was losing support given the anti-reform campaign that was underway. He added that he was convinced the unions' stance against reforms was politically-motivated.
Asked whether the planned reforms could cause the government coalition to collapse given the second thoughts by the junior coalition People's Party (SLS) about flat tax, Jansa said he would deal with the issue once somebody informs him that they are having second thoughts.
