Govt Adopts Decree on Foreign Policy Coordination

Ljubljana, 01 December

The cabinet adopted on Thursday a decree which deals with cooperation and coordination between the government and other institutions responsible for Slovenia's foreign policy.

The decree regulates more precisely the cooperation between the Foreign Ministry, the cabinet, the parliament and the president in the field of foreign and international affairs.
In line with the document, the foreign minister is to draft a uniform annual foreign policy programme based on the programmes of scheduled meetings of individual institutions.
"This document does not interfere with the authority of the parliament or president," FM Dimitrij Rupel told the press after the cabinet's session.
"The decree is not directly connected to any incident in the past. We are building a system for the future," Rupel said.
The need for such a decree is nothing new. Although some relate it with current developments, the cabinet has been discussing it for some time, Rupel added.
Plans for such a decree were first unveiled after an opposition MP inquired about the lack of coordination between the Foreign Ministry and President Janez Drnovsek's recent plan for the status of Kosovo.
