Piran, 25 November

Under the auspices of President Janez Drnovsek, the Piran Days of Architecture 2005, featuring exhibitions and an international seminar on architectural policies, opened on Friday in the seaside resort in Piran.

The seminar discussed architecture policies of European governments with participants centering on whether such policies actually improve quality of life in urban areas or only present "additional heaps of useless paper".
The seminar opened on Saturday, with lecturers from Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Finland, Austria and Slovenia discussing architecture policy-makers and other topics.
The accompanying exhibitions also opened on Friday. The central exhibition took place in the Piran city gallery. The show featured recent architectural achievements from Austria, Italy, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia.
The Piranesi award for best architectural achievement of the past two years has gone to Croatia's Sasa Randic and Idis Turato for their Fran Krsto Frankopan Primary School. According to the international jury, the school, located on the Croatian island of Krk, is intelligently and unobtrusively placed in an important historical ambiance, in line with the contours of the city's ancient wall.
The jury also conferred three Piranesi mentions as well as a Student Piranesi award. Its members also said that a majority of presented works were of high quality.
The Piran Days of Architecture have been organised since 1983 by the gallery. This year an international seminar on architectural policies and accompanying exhibitions in several galleries took place between 24 and 27 November. According to the organisers it soon became one of the few expert meetings of architects with international participation in Slovenia.
The seminar is also the third architecture-related event taking place in Slovenia in November, closely following the first congress of Slovenian architects that took place at the beginning of the month.
Meanwhile, the third international architectural biennial is currently taking place in Ljubljana. Entitled "Euphoria" the event features exhibitions, panels, documentaries, lectures and other accompanying events.
