Govt Appoints New State Secretary for Slovenians Abroad

The cabinet appointed on Thursday Zorko Pelikan the new state secretary of the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad. Zorko, who is to assume his post on 1 December, will succeed Franc Puksic, who resigned in July over disagreements with the government.

Pelikan, currently still consul at the Slovenian Consulate General in Trieste, is actually returning to the post which he held five years ago when the office was still a part of the Foreign Ministry. He was appointed in 2000 when incumbent Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk was prime minister.
The Slovenian Cultural Economic Association (SKGZ), an umbrella organisation of the Slovenian minority in Italy, has already congratulated the new state secretary.
In its press release, SKGZ stressed that Pelikan is familiar with minority issues and has always tried to find a balanced approach to dealing with the wishes of Slovenians abroad.
