Slovenian extreme swimmer Martin Strel has announced his latest world-record quest - a swim of the world's longest river, the Amazon.
Unveiling the project, Strel said he was planning to swim 5,430 kilometres of the South American river - in Peru and Brazil - in 70 days, between 1 February and 11 April at a rate of about 78 km per day.
"The Amazon is not only the longest river in the world...it is also the most dangerous," Strel told the press on Monday in Ljubljana. "However, I'm convinced that I can do it."
In his 25-year career, Strel has taken on the world's greatest rivers, such as the Danube in 2000, Mississippi in 2002 and Yangtze in 2004. However, he believes the Amazon will be a whole different story.
Strel, a musician by profession who turned to marathon swimming in 1978, says he swims in the name of peace, friendship and clean waters.
