The government adopted a proposal for the drafting of a three-year programme of French for employees in the state administration, which it considers as one of the key elements in preparations for its stint at chairing the EU in 2008.
The cabinet thus made the commitment to teach French to diplomats and employees in cooperation with the intergovernmental agency for Francophilia, France, the French community in Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The programme is to include some 700 public officials, who are expected to learn enough to use French at work as well as negotiate and prepare documents in what is one of the EU's working languages.
