The rock sensation Siddharta triumphed at Thursday's MTV European Music Awards in Lisbon as the best act in the region, the regional programme MTV Adria, which participated in the event for the first time this year, said on Friday.
Siddharta was nominated for "Best Act - MTV Adria" together with Slovenian pop group Leeloojamais, and three Croatian performers - the electro pop quartet Leut Magnetic, pop rock band Urban & 4, and Massimo Savic.
The choice of the nominees was based on their placement in the World Chart Express, where Leeloojamais' "Ne zameri mi" (Don't Hold It against Me) and three of Siddharta's songs (My Dice, Ring and Thor) have been played.
Siddharta were thrilled about the award: "A few years ago we were watching the event on television and now were are here ... We thank all ... those who believe in us and voted for us," they said upon receiving the award.
After a sold-out concert at the Ljubljana central stadium in September 2003, which the band performed together with RTV Slovenija's Symphony Orchestra, and unbelievable popularity, Siddharta set another milestone in the music history of the region, MTV Adria said.
Since the band first appeared in 1995, Siddharta has managed to become the most popular pop rock band in Slovenia, with an elaborate and catchy mixture of Gothic and melodic rock. Their audience comes from all generations, from teenagers to students and even their parents.
Their first album "ID" was released in 1999, receiving extremely favourable reviews and selling 13,000 copies. With the release of their second album, "Nord" (2001), Siddharta started to invest into videos too, releasing some of them also in English.
The second album broke all the Slovenian records, selling over 7,000 copies in less than two months. In total, "Nord" sold over 24,000 copies. The band has won many prestigious awards at home.
