Drnovsek Supplements his Kosovo Plan

Ljubljana, 1 November

President Janez Drnovsek underscored the role of the Serb minority in Kosovo for the future status of the province in a letter addressed to world leaders on Tuesday, 1 November.

In a follow-up to his recent nine-point plan for the resolution of Kosovo's status, Drnovsek stresses that the Serb minority must be guaranteed security and given sufficient autonomy. He also points out that a crucial factor in any agreement will be in granting ex-territorial status to the biggest cultural, religious and historical monuments in Kosovo.
Finding a solution to the future of Kosovo and turning Serbia's attention to the future would lift a burden off the whole region, Drnovsek told the press on Wednesday, 2 November. He believes this would have positive spillover effects for Macedonia and Vojvodina. Drnovsek is moreover convinced that the implementation of his "balanced document" should be in the interest of the Serb and Albanian sides.
Meanwhile, PM Janez Jansa on 2 November welcomed Drnovsek's active appearance on the political scene as "the president is a great moral authority and can help a great deal...". However, he would like to see more harmony with the government on views regarding foreign policy. Jansa told TV Slovenija that with regard to Drnovsek's proposal on Kosovo and his support for arbitration on the sea border with Croatia he could not "speak about different views but rather methods between the government and the president".
