Slovenia ranks 9th alongside the Czech Republic in the latest Worldwide Press Freedom Index, which is published annually by Reporters Without Borders.
According to the report, which was published on Thursday in Paris, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland enjoy the highest level of media freedom.
They are followed by Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia, countries underlined in the report as proof that the insistence of many authoritarian leaders that democracy takes decades to establish itself is a lie.
Interestingly, some western democracies slipped down the index: the US (44th) for example fell more than 20 places, mainly because of the imprisonment of a New York Times reporter and legal moves undermining the confidentiality of journalistic sources.
North Korea once again comes at the bottom of the index. It is closely followed in the 167-country list by Eritrea (166th) and Turkmenistan (165th), which the report says are "black holes for news where the privately-owned media is not allowed and freedom of expression does not exist".
