Ljubljana, 19 October

A three-day international conference entitled eChallenges, launched on Wednesday in Ljubljana, discussed key issues in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at its plenary session.

At a press conference following the session, Jure Zupan, the minister of higher education, science and technology, stressed that challenges lie in linking the research and industry sectors to allow solutions to be implemented in the shortest time possible.
Joao da Silva of the European Commission's Directorate General for the Information Society and Media meanwhile said that more should be invested in the field, as ICT is one of the basic factors of development and progress in the EU.
The press also heard Noriyuki Yonemura of Fuji Xerox, who presented a concept of the office of the future; Christopher Horn of IONA Technologies lectured on improvements to e-business in Europe; while Ingo Juraske from Hewlett-Packard discussed e-government projects.
The event, sponsored by the European Commission, is seeing the attendance of over 500 delegates from leading commercial, government and research organisations around the world. It is be accompanied by an exhibition on new challenges in the field.
