Slovenj Gradec, 24 October

Slovenj Gradec, the only Slovenian city to bear the name of UN Messenger of Peace, marked United Nations Day on Monday with a series of events that turned the entire city into a showcase of peace under the title "Let's Preserve Our Peace."

Delivering the keynote address at a ceremony that rounded off the day of activities, Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said the world needs an organisation capable of acting globally and efficiently resolving disputes.
He touched on the UN reform which was discussed at the UN Summit in September, stressing that the member countries need to agree on ways to implement the proposed reforms, or else the UN will be no more successful than it has been so far.
Rupel delivered the keynote address at a ceremony that saw attendance by Former President Milan Kucan, former assistant UN secretary general for political affairs Danilo Tuerk and members of the diplomatic corps.
The ceremony came at the conclusion of the traditional Peace Festival, which featured exhibitions of paintings, photos and literary works by children revolving around the theme of peace.
Many peace NGOs had stands in the centre of the city, while classrooms moved outdoors to attend a presentation of the network of UNESCO schools.
UN Day marks the day in 1945 when the UN Charter entered into force with the signature of all five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
