The number of children that learn Slovenian in the Austrian border province of Carinthia has grown considerably in the 2005/2006 school year, the region's education council said on Friday.
A total of 3,734 children and young people opted to learn Slovenian in addition to German for this school year, 161 more than in the previous school year.
Of the total, 1,819 children are learning Slovenian in state schools, located in the area defined by the Austrian Minority Education Act.
The number of students learning Slovenian in state schools in the mentioned area grew by 3% over last year to represent 36.25% of all students, despite a drop in the overall number of students enrolled at these schools.
The education council also said that participation in bilingual education is voluntary, so the numbers in no way reflect the ethnic composition of the children.
